The "2005 Euro-Singapore ICT Cooperation event", or EuroSingapore2005, organised by the European Commission’s DG Information Society and A*STAR in the framework of the GAPFILL Project, and supported by leading European and Singaporean institutions, was successfully held on January 27 and 28, 2005 at the Regent Singapore, where it attracted around 270 delegates.
In the opening session, Mr Heng Chee How, Minister of State for Trade and Industry, and His Excellency Mr Vassilis Bontosoglou, Ambassador of the European Union, delivered welcome addresses. During the two days, a total of 45 research proposals (selected among 142 research proposals that were submitted in response to the EuroSingapore2005 call for papers) were presented in plenary sessions, addressing various ICT fields: Nanoelectronics, Cognitive Systems, Semantic-based Knowledge and Content Systems, Broadband, Software and Services, Integrated Biomedical Information for Better Health, Mobile and Wireless Systems and Platforms Beyond 3G, Photonic Components, safety, etc.
A number of networking opportunities were organised for European and Singaporean delegates, including pre-event technical visits (to STMicroelectronics, Agilent Technologies, and CAMTech), breaks during the two-day conference, and a networking dinner on January 27.
It is estimated that 10 to 15 proposals, which included Singaporean organisations, should be submitted in response to IST Call 4, thanks to the efforts (information, networking opportunities, help-desk service) of the EuroSingapore2005 promoters. Further proposals including Singaporean organisations are expected to be submitted in response to IST Calls 5 and 6.
